This doesn’t surprise me.  The Republican party made an actual conscious decision to pander to racist white people in the 60s, and work against civil rights, thinking that they would have enough of said racist whites to keep winning elections.  That’s such a shameful history.  The Republican Party is the party that emphasizes the concept of “the other,” which, throughout history has been nothing but a tragic disaster.  That idea that some of us are “real Americans” and some of us aren’t.  So infuriating.   And as we see, nothing new.  Screw you, look at the ideals of the country, and what we’re working toward, and how many of you (hi, Rick Santorum, your grandfather was from Italy?) wouldn’t have been considered “real Americans” by conservatives of a couple generations ago.
